GPS trackers on cellular, trips rebuilt from motion: 3,736 noisy trips became 1,421 real ones

Cellular GPS units, a small cloud bridge, trips detected from motion, and an AI daily digest.

01 / Problem

What wasn't working.

Vehicles roam far from the office. The trackers' ignition wire was not connected, so trip start and stop had to come from somewhere else. Raw points nobody reads are not useful.

02 / Approach

What I built.

  1. 01

3 MT532 cellular GPS units on prepaid IoT SIMs valid to 2036.

  2. 02

A small TCP bridge on a t4g.nano cloud instance takes the device protocol and writes clean points.

  3. 03

Trips come from motion, not ignition. One vehicle's trip count went from 3,736 to 1,421 after the rebuild.

  4. 04

Hourly offline alerts. Claude writes trip summaries and a daily digest.

04 / Result

3,736 → 1,421

trips after rebuilding them from motion. Trips that match what happened. A digest someone actually reads.

Motion trips

Start and stop from movement, so wiring does not matter.

Offline alerts

Hourly check for units that stopped reporting.

Daily digest

Plain-language summary of each vehicle's day.

Ready for more

MQTT path ready for other tracker types.
